SMC cares for the citizens, provides relief of 9 lakh food packets daily.
SURAT MUNICIPAL CORPORATION (SMC) along with the collaboration from NGOs in Surat and Akshayapatra has been taking care of migrants, destitute, stranded, needy, old and suffering individuals during the corona COVID19 pandemic. Initially what started as a help by NGOs to the needy in the first week of lockdown, soon began as a organised means to provide food packets to the citizens of Surat.
More than 400 NGOs and self managed seva-santhas came forward during this lockdown situation which became necessary due to the increase in Corona cases across the country. SMC initially distributed food packets in certain areas and then soon started managing self operated kitchens as well as with the help from Akshayapatra was able to cater to provide around 7 lakh food packets.

SMC decides to distribute dry ration kit instead of daily food packets to avoid corona infection spread.
PRECAUTION BETTER THAN CURE
Around 100 food distribution centres were being operated by SMC in all zones of the city. Major locations were schools, halls and open places with compounds where social distancing was properly maintained while distributing food packets. However with rise in corona cases it was noticed that gathering of people are one place was not on favour of reducing the impact.
So SMC decided to supply dry ration kits to the needy instead of providing food packets daily cooked. It was decided to gradually distribute the dry ration kits in various locations and phase out distribution centres to avoid any mishap. 87 distribution centres are being operated as of 27-April-2010
