Tapi River is one the 10 longest rivers, stretching at 724km starting in central India and flowing towards the west into Gulf of Khambhat.
Tapi River also called as Tapati, daughter of Sun God, starts it journey in Satpura range, in Multai and then flows through parts of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra then finally going through Gujarat. It passes through Dhuliya, Burhanpur, Bhusawal and Surat.
Around 8 dams have been constructed over Tapi River, out of which Ukai Dam is prominent and houses a large reservoir as well as a Power Plant.
Tapi River is one of the few Rivers in India which flow from East to West, while all the other rivers flow from West to East. Other rivers like Narmada, Mahi and Sabarmati also flow from East to West.
Tapi River flows right into the city of Surat and then finally reaches it’s end point Magdalla-Hazira where it merges with Arabian Sea. Near by Dumas Beach is an attraction point for many tourists and locals.
Tapi River is home to many migratory birds like Flamingoes, Seagulls and other birds like Cranes. Many small mangrooves can be spotted during it’s flow in Surat.
Many temples are built near river bed in the villages and cities located in it’s path. Surat Fort was built during the British rule in India is located on River Tapi.
Tapi River provides fresh drinking water to the citizens of Surat. Many water treatment plants have been built by Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) which then send fresh water to Surat and near by villages using many Water Pumping Stations. There are many canals built in and out of Tapi River, prominent being the Ukai-Kakrapar canal which stretches across the Surat district.
Tapi River has long history of being flooded on many occasions in several decades and has caused lost of damage to Surat multiple times. Flood of August 2006 is marked as of the worst floods in history of the city.
Kakrapar Atomic Power Station is a nuclear power station in India, which lies in the proximity of the city of Vyara. It is located 65km from Surat in the state of Gujarat. It consists of two 220 MW pressurised water reactor with heavy water as moderator (PHWR). KAPS-1 went critical on 3 September 1992 and began commercial electricity production a few months later on 6 May 1993. KAPS-2 went critical on 8 January 1995 and began commercial production on 1 September 1995.
KAPS-2 was shut down after a coolant channel leak in July 2015 and a similar issue forced the shutdown of KAPS-1 in March 2016. After a replacement of coolant channels and feeder tubes, KAPS-2 attained criticality in September 2018. Maintenance on KAPS-1 was scheduled to be completed by March 2019.
2 Units of 700MW each are under construction at this location.

Indore has been ranked as the cleanest city in India as per the Swach Surveskhan 2019. This is the third time in a row, Indore has been ranked no. 1 in the survey conducted across 100s of cities in India.
Indore (1 Rank out of 485 cities) overcame the issues of treatment and segregation of waste and went on to become the cleanest city of the country in Swachh Survekshan 2018. Indore has used the best technology for composting of the bulk organic waste that is produced almost every day in Sabzi Mandis. Asia’s largest bio-methanation plant has also been built in Indore.

SURAT MUNICIPAL CORPORATION GUJARAT Best City in ‘Solid Waste Management’ in above 10,00,000 population category in Swachh Survekshan 2019, conducted every year to rank Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in various segments of cleanliness as per the population category.
The Solid Waste Management (SWM) activity of Surat Municipal Corporation is directly linked with generation, storage, collection, transfer and transport, processing and disposal of solid wastes generated in the city. The city has been awarded the ‘Best City in Solid Waste Management’ in the more than 10 lakh population category. It scored 1613 out of a maximum of 1783 marks in the Swachh Survekshan 2019.
In Direct Observation component of Solid Waste Management under the Swachh Survekshan 2019, the city has scored 773 marks out of 790, making it a high performer in terms of maintenance of public facilities and general cleanliness of the city’s commercial and residential areas. During on ground assessment, more than 95% of the Residential Areas and Commercial Areas were found to be substantially clean, undoubtedly a result of all commercial areas being appropriately covered by twin bins and twice a day sweeping.
Furthermore, more than 90 % of the CTs/PTs surveyed were also found to be well lit well ventilated, had electricity connection, water supply/flush, onsite safe disposal system, and IEC messages in the form of hoarding/paintings/banners/ writings.100% of the catchment areas of railway station and bus station that were sampled were found to be clean. Most citizens were also found to have an impressive outlook on the city administration’s initiatives on cleanliness, awareness programs and other Swachh Bharat Mission activities.
