Snake Catcher | Snake Rescue in Surat

Today early morning cleaning staff was going about the errand in the society as usual, when they spotted a snake in the compound. They called in the Supervisor and informed the community via online message to avoid going towards the compound corner. They started making noise when I went to see.

Snake had made it’s way into the compound via the trees overhanging on the wall. In the backyard there are many trees and a waterhole. Snake used to roam about in that place usually in monsoon. They tried to contact anyone who would help rescue the snake. After about 10-15 minutes they didn’t seem to be able to find any way out.

I stepped in to avoid anyone taking wrong action against the snake. I made some calls to the animal rescue teams and one of them told they will find someone in our area and update. After 10 minutes I got a call from one of the nature volunteer and he asked for address. They reached in about 15 minutes.

The snake had hidden behind some steel planks near the wall. We waited around to see if the snake didn’t escape anywhere. Once they came in, they asked for the person who saw it. Asked for the size and colour. First plank was removed and nothing seen. People were doubting if it had left from somewhere. After removing the second one, snake jumped right out it and started to crawl ahead.

One of the volunteer just tried to hold it but it went pass by. Another volunteer held it from the tail and slowly started to let it flow. Within a minute he got good control on it and it was moving freely. Meanwhile they asked for pillow cover and one of the occupant provided them. They let the snake slip into the pillow cover and tied it properly. They just left after that.

Few people resort to hurting the snake, which is actually not required.

Whenever you spot a snake or someone around you spots any snake, try to remain calm and inform animal rescue team immediately. Do not hurt or overcrowd the place to avoid any accident. Provide all details clearly about the snake, location and keep a watch on the snake.

Indian Robin – Birds in Surat

The Indian robin is sexually dimorphic in plumage, with the male being mainly black with a white shoulder patch or stripe whose visible extent can vary with posture. The northern populations have the upper plumage brownish, while the southern populations are black above. The males have chestnut undertail coverts and these are visible as the bird usually holds the 6–8 cm long tail raised upright. The females are brownish above, have no white shoulder stripe and are greyish below, with the vent a paler shade of chestnut than the males. Birds of the northern populations are larger than those from southern India or Sri Lanka. Juvenile birds are much like females, but the throat is mottled

Indian Robin in Surat

Often seen in the branches of trees or green areas chirping similar to sparrows but distinctly loud and consistently musical sound. They are dark in colour slightly larger than sparrow and identified by their tail which is kept upright.

In my observation of these birds over the last two years, I have seen them grow from around 2-4 birds to now nearly over 15 in number. Couple of months back the Corona Pandemic led lockdown all-over the city. During that time one couple found an old scooter that was not moved. They built their nest in the front storage compartment. Which was dark and cosy so suited them. They used to daily cross over the compound wall and come over to the other side. They would catch some insects or worms in the open ground and fly over to the compound fall. Then see left and right for any danger and rush into the nest. Both the male and female worked in tandem. When was on the wall, other would fly to catch some food in the ground. And as the other went up. The next one went out. It was so coordinated effort. And they did so for an hour or so in the evening and early mornings. As their chick grew big enough they would make sounds asking for more food. Within two weeks they were able to hop over the nest and fly into the bushes.

Monsoon in Surat – July 2020

June 2020 – Even though Monsoon arrived during the second week of June, there was not much presence during the month of June. Sky was cloudy and it seemed that it may rain anytime. However apart from some pouring for few minutes, there was no full-fledged entry of Monsoon.

July 2020 – By the second week of July, Monsoon has officially begun in Surat. It has been constantly pouring heavily at nights with thunderstorms. Open lands have become muddy and filled to form waterholes. Low lying streets are getting water clogged everytime it rains for an hour or so. The trees have turned all green and the grass is growing well.

Water birds are making the best of it. Due to pandemic people have restricted movement. No one is seen going out apart from some work or essentials. Things are slow and lazy.

555 mm rainfall has been observed till 15 July 2020.

Shine brighter to find the unseen !

With a beautiful heart and soul
It’s difficult to behold
With the precious dreams
And priceless beliefs
In the material world
Looking for an angel
Is like in going into the ocean
And searching that pebble
In the deepest darkest depths
But hope is on
For with your own glow
The magic can turn things flow
You may see your own reflection
Across the sea in the perfection
So glow as bright as you can
As you are searching to be loved
There is someone looking to love
Looking for that sparkle out of you
