SpaceX successfully launched it’s 12th Starlink mission containing a stack of 60 satellites

SpaceX successfully launched its twelfth Starlink mission, which launched 60 Starlink satellites to orbit on September 3, 2020. Falcon 9 lifted off from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Falcon 9’s first stage previously supported launch of the GPS III Space Vehicle 03 mission in June 2020. Following stage separation, SpaceX will land Falcon 9’s first stage on the “Of Course I Still Love You” droneship, which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

A total of over 700 satellites have been launched till now. Beta testing is being carried out by the employees and beta users to test the latency and download speeds. Nat Geo Show : The Next Frontier – Smart Cities India

Nat Geo Show on Smart Cities in India has been very well documented. It features the development with respect to Smart Cities mission in cities like Surat, Vishakapatnam, Pune and Varanasi. Each city is leading it’s change in particular aspect as necessary in the city. As these cities set the benchmark for development, implementation and projects in regards to smart technologies, other cities can replicate similar implementation at their level.

SURAT

Under the Smart Cities implementation projects Surat is leading in transportation and public services. Surat Municipal Corporation managed Bus Rapid Transit System BRTS is a fully functional centralized GPS system based Bus transport system in the city with a separate corridor for the buses. The system is centrally managed and monitor with over 270 buses running across the city. Electronically managed timings shown on the display inside the bus stops provided a glimpse of the waiting time for the passengers. Online booking of tickets and schedule help to avoid queues.

To promote the use of Public transport – City mayor travels to work via BRTS once in a week. Surat also has bicycles for use at various junctions to provide last mile service. (Not shown in the show)

City is monitored from the command center and actions taken respectively to correct any course.

VISHAKAPATNAM

Vishakapatnam is leading this frontier by developing new projects in the city for beautification, public parks and various projects undertaken to set a benchmark in design, development and public awareness and sensitivity. Under such projects one of the park has been developed keeping in mind the requirements for special children who seem to be enjoying and having a good time everyday in such park.

Popularity of that park has raised curiousity in other city administrators and Commissioners who seem to be interested in replicating similar projects in their own cities. We must set such benchmark in every front of development and implementation in projects across India.

Similar large scale park is being developed with facility for skating at national level by the same team. Along with local plants and greenery, design and astetics are given prime importance. Such projects boost the morale of city dwellers and create a positive vibe for the future.

PUNE

Pune is leading in technology implementation under Smart cities. Pune has implemented Emergency Call Boxes which are attended and managed by a central help centre. Any kind of Emergencies are attended by a call and immediate action taken via various departments in place.

Entire city is under observation via centrally managed system and every occasion is planned for. Any traffic movement is routed via centrally managed display hoardings.

VARANASI

Varanasi is leading the change in restoring archeological sites and monuments of cultural importance. Once such project near the Ganga river is go restore a temple and build a complex which is connected to the river directly. Major services will be upgraded to latest modern technology and services like online darshan, pre-booking, personalized guide and similar are available.

Development across various cities and projects under taken to improve the functioning of cities along with public participation is bringing some of the cities to global standards and similar projects are replicated by smaller cities in frontiers of energy, transportation, digitization, cleanliness, hygiene, emergency and healthcare services and centrally operated services.

India is changing with it’s cities becoming smarter and people adopting new technologies. In times to come, some of the cities will be the leaders in many frontiers and set benchmark in city functioning. We wish to see many more such projects unfold and provide comfort to the citizens.


Kakrapar Atomic Power Station, Gujarat, India

Kakrapar Atomic Power Station is a nuclear power station in India, which lies in the proximity of the city of Vyara. It is located 65km from Surat in the state of Gujarat. It consists of two 220 MW pressurised water reactor with heavy water as moderator (PHWR). KAPS-1 went critical on 3 September 1992 and began commercial electricity production a few months later on 6 May 1993. KAPS-2 went critical on 8 January 1995 and began commercial production on 1 September 1995.

KAPS-2 was shut down after a coolant channel leak in July 2015 and a similar issue forced the shutdown of KAPS-1 in March 2016. After a replacement of coolant channels and feeder tubes, KAPS-2 attained criticality in September 2018. Maintenance on KAPS-1 was scheduled to be completed by March 2019.

2 Units of 700MW each are under construction at this location.

Nuclear power is the fifth-largest source of electricity in India after coal, gas, hydroelectricity and wind power. As of March 2018, India has 22 nuclear reactors in operation in 7 nuclear power plants, having a total installed capacity of 6,780 MW

Vital Contribution from Surat in Chandrayaan-2 mission by ISRO

SURAT: When India becomes the fourth country in the world to soft land its Vikram lander and Pragyan rover on the lunar surface as part of its Chandrayaan-2 mission and conduct experiments on moon’s south polar region, a tiny component made in the Diamond City may have played a big role in this Indian Space Research Organisation’s achievement.

A private company located at Pandesara GIDC has made a protective ceramic (fire proof) component, which ISRO scientists call ‘Squib’. A part of the system of the rocket, it will protect wires and electrical apparatus from 2,500 degrees Celsius to 3,000 degrees Celsius temperature. Squib is a result of a quarter century of hard work of a local industrialist and scientists.

In the past, it was being imported by ISRO. The company was approached by ISRO scientists to take up the challenge in 1992. It manufactured the squib and supplied to ISRO in 1995.

The company’s managing director Nimesh Bachkaniwala told TOI, “It is a proud feeling as an Indian and also Gujarati. We have been supplying the fire proof ceramic component to ISRO for the past 25 years. Earlier, ISRO was importing this particular component, but when they saw our product they were satisfied with it.”

Bachkaniwala said foreign countries had stopped supplying this vital part for Indian space missions in 1992, which opened the door for us to manufacture the same for the rockets. Now, it is 25 years that the fire proof component of our company is being used for all the space missions of ISRO and even missile programmes of the country.

Bachkaniwala said, “We supply up to 6,000 components for a particular mission. It depends on the order given by ISRO. Since this is a classified information, I had to take permission from ISRO to share details with the media. Even my wife didn’t know that we were manufacturing such a component for ISRO until recently.

Bachkaniwala family was into textile machine manufacturing before Nimesh Bachkaniwala decided to diversify into ceramics sector.

Surat City BRTS Real Time Bus Tracking

Surat Municipical Corporation has collaborated with Google along with the help of Surat Sitilink Ltd and Surat Smart City Development to add real-time information of buses into Google Maps. Now you can see the details of real-time information of buses which will help you plan your journey as well as you won’t be sitting at the bus-stop wondering when the bus will arrive. You can click on the bus-stop you are at and see the buses which are going to arrive, the expected time for those buses and delay.

This feature is available on both Android and iOS apps of Google Maps.
